The Heart of European Shipping Beats in Piraeus

Maritime industry representatives, the officials who formulate maritime policy in Europe’s ports, will arrive at the port of Piraeus from May 28 to 31, to celebrate the European Maritime Day 2015.

The Municipality of Piraeus, the host city for this year’s European Maritime Day has prepared an impressive schedule of events, worthy of the largest maritime event in Europe.

The celebration of European Maritime Day 2015 will begin with a two-day conference at the Athens Concert Hall on Thursday, May 28, and Friday, May 29. The main conference will be “Gateways to Maritime Growth” and it will host high-level sessions and stakeholder workshops attracting delegates and experts from across Europe and beyond. Furthermore, the participants will discuss the spectrum of opportunities and great challenges that ports and seas present, share their experiences and develop new synergies.

The Municipality of Piraeus has also organized other 60 events that are set to take place on Saturday, May 30, and Sunday, May 31, across the city. Exhibitions, guided tours, concerts, theatrical performances, traditional dances, tastings, film screenings, competitions, cycling events, sports activities, parties and many other surprises await those who will visit Piraeus during the grand celebration.

On Saturday, May 30, there will be a big street party in the Trouba area of Piraeus involving local shops. There will also be a street performance by Konstantinos Rigos’ “Red Lanterns,” as well as numerous free admission tours to the Maritime Museum of Greece and the Hellenic Naval Academy. The most important monuments, archaeological and cultural sites of Piraeus will also be open to the public.

The Municipality has also organized swimming and kayak races both on Saturday and Sunday, while several exhibitions will take place in Piraeus’ cultural centers.
