Η εξέγερση και οι στόχοι τού Σπάρτακου έχουν αναλυθεί και ερμηνευθεί ποικιλοτρόπως από ιστορικούς και διανοούμενους. Πολλοί είδαν στην επανάσταση αυτή μια προσπάθεια ανατροπής του κοινωνικού κατεστημένου και τον Σπάρτακο ως έναν κοινωνικό επαναστάτη, κυρίως λόγω της μεγάλης προσχώρησης Ρωμαίων πολιτών των κατώτερων στρωμάτων στην επανάσταση.
