Back in the Paleolithic Era: The First Mariners

Source: www.greeknewsagenda.gr

As a breakthrough of experimental archeology can be viewed the team project "First Mariners," who built a raft by using only organic materials and copies of Paleolithic tools, and travelled on it from Kythira to Crete island, thus confirming archaeologists’ assumptions that Paleolithic populations were able to cross large shipping distances with their own makeshift boats. The First Mariners’ team started its journey with the raft named "Melida" from Kythira on July 17 and completed its venture by arriving in Chania, Crete on July 19.

The team was led by the 73 year-old historian and writer, Bob Hobman, who has built, filmed and navigated native craft through Indonesia’s Spice Islands and the Pacific for four decades.

Missile Strike on Malaysia Airlines Flight Killed About 100 AIDS Researchers and Advocates

About 100 passengers on the Malaysia Airlines plane shot down over eastern Ukraine on Thursday were headed to the biennial International AIDS Conference in Melbourne, Australia. Among the many lost were two giants of the HIV research community. “Both Joep Lange and Jacqueline van Tongeren meant a lot to us, as colleagues and as friends,” an anguished Brandon O’Dell of the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development told me. Lange was once the president of the International AIDS Society, which organizes the conference. Van Tongeren, his partner, was a nurse and advocate and head of communications for the AIGHD.

Grèce : un aéroport comme site touristique

Source: www.easyvoyage.com

Source: www.newsbeast.gr

του Α.Π.Θ.

Source: www.naftemporiki.gr

‘Made by Hellas’ Exhibition at Hellenic Motor Museum

The car exhibition “Made by Hellas” organized by the Hellenic Motor Museum, opened on Thursday, June 5 and will last until the end of the month

Source: greece.greekreporter.com

On the question “how many cars do think have been manufactured in Greece ?” most Greek citizens would probably reply “None.” However, the case is rather different as proven by the thematic exhibition “Made in Hellas” organized by the Hellenic Motor Museum, opened on Thursday June 5 and will last until the end of the month.

The exhibition was the idea of the founder of the Museum, Theodore Charagionis. Fifty percent of the cars on display are part of the Museum’s own collection, while the other half is contributed by the Automobile and Touring Club of Greece (ELPA), the Antique Car Club of Greece (FILPA) and by other individual contributors. The aim of the exhibition is to present vehicles that have any relationship with Greece, whether they were made or designed in Greece or whether they are designed or manufactured by Greeks abroad.

The exhibition includes widely known models like the Nissan Sunny, which was manufactured in Greece from 1981 until 1995 and of course, the legendary Mini, which was wholly designed by Alexandros Issigonis. In the “Made by Hellas” exhibition many variations of the particular car are displayed.

Other cars that enrich the exhibition are the Fiat Barchetta, one of the many models designed by Andreas Zapatinas, and who would know that the creator of the modern Audi A3, Gary Telaak, comes from Thessaloniki? Or that a small electric car named Enfield E800 was designed during the 1970’s in Greece? Ηowever, most vehicles manufactured in Greece belong to the category of small professional cars. A visitor of the exhibition “Made by Hellas” has the opportunity to admire models like the Pony, Zebra and Renault Farma and lesser known models like the Sherpa and the Farmobil 700.

The well-known mechanical engineer, Dimitris Korres, will also participate in the exhibition with three prototype models that precede the famous Korres P4 model. Also single-seat vehicles created by Greek universities and polytechnic schools will be on display. On the stands placed between the exhibits, the visitors can read about the history of each vehicle, as well as, the history of the vehicles that could not be on display, like the Scavas II or the Chicago designed by Giorgos Michail.

The exhibition ‘Made by Hellas’ will be accommodated until June 30 on the top floor of the Hellenic Motor Museum in Athens. The general entry fee is 8€, whereas the reduced fee for students, children, the elderly and groups of more than four people is 5€.

On the Absinthe Trail

Visiting a region along the France-Switzerland border with rich ties to the once-banned spirit known as the Green Fairy.

Source: www.nytimes.com

Sunbeams shot through the forest, lighting up the wispy fog on the path ahead. For over an hour I’d been walking up the mountain trail without seeing a soul, marching to the off-kilter orchestras of Swiss cowbells ringing their dull symphonies in nearby meadows, to which I added my own contrapuntal exhalations whenever I stopped to catch my breath. For several minutes, I was certain that I had lost my way. But eventually I spotted a sign for the goal I was seeking: La Fontaine Froide, it said, was somewhere up ahead.

A “cold fountain” wasn’t the only reason I’d come to this tiny Francophone valley in northwest Switzerland, just across the border from the Franche-Comté province of eastern France. I was looking for the fountain because its chilly water was said to be ideal for diluting — or “troubling,” as locals put it — a glass of absinthe, the area’s traditional alcoholic beverage. An intense spirit flavored with a bouquet of powerful herbs, absinthe had been the favorite drink of Impressionist painters, Romantic poets and the bons vivants of the belle epoque before being banned around Europe on the eve of World War I. There was supposed to be a bottle of the good stuff, as well as a glass, waiting to reward any visitor who survived the long hike up the mountain.

Britain plans to build commercial spaceport

Eight possible locations for spaceport will be announced by ministers at Farnborough air show on Tuesday

Source: www.theguardian.com

Britain is to build a commercial spaceport that will be used to launch manned missions and commercial satellites. A list of eight locations for the spaceport – which could be used by Virgin Galactic and the US company XCOR to launch space tourism flights – has been drawn up by the government and will be announced on Tuesday at the Farnborough air show.

It is planned to have Britain’s spaceport in operation by 2018 even though a decision has yet to be made on its location. Several sites around the country have been linked to spaceport plans and are now being studied by officials.

"We have worked out the regulatory regime we need to launch spaceships in Britain and assessed what kind of aviation checks will have to be imposed when we put craft into space," said the science minister, David Willetts. "In the wake of that work we have now created a shortlist of locations for the first British spaceport."

Details of the list are being kept secret until Tuesday but experts believe locations could include the north of Scotland, Bristol, Norfolk and the Outer Hebrides. The first of these possible sites – Lossiemouth on the Moray coast of Scotland – is already home to a major helicopter rescue centre and has been pinpointed by Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic as a desirable site for launching its spaceplanes, a proposal that has been backed enthusiastically by the Scottish National party.

Koufonissia, Greece: Secret Seasides

Continuing our series on the best unsung beach holiday resorts in Europe, Jane Foster offers a guide to Koufonissia, in the Greek Islands, with information on accommodation and eating out

Source: www.telegraph.co.uk

The sandy beaches that rim Ano Koufonissi’s south coast give onto cerulean blue sea of a hue that seems confined to artists’ palettes, seemingly impossible in reality. Hidden away between the larger Cycladic islands of Naxos and Amorgos, Koufonissia (plural) is made up of two tiny islets, Ano Koufonissi (Upper Koufonissi) and Kato Koufonissi (Lower Koufonissi), which are separated by a 200-metre sea channel. While Kato Koufonissi remains uninhabited, Ano Koufonissi, with its whitewashed Cycladic cottages, has a buzzing little community of 366. Locals live mainly from fishing – it is claimed that there are more boats than residents – there are no real roads and hardly any cars, so everyone either walks or cycles. Before 1980, there was no electricity either, and it is only over the last decade that Koufonissi has become a popular escape with Athenians in search of an unpretentious and inexpensive summer holiday. It’s much loved by yachters too, who moor up their sailing boats along the seafront, to unwind after visiting the noisier and glitzier islands of Santorini and Mykonos.

The Greek Pick-Up Artists of the 70s Loved British Girls On Tour | VICE United Kingdom

Source: www.vice.com

Long, unkempt, greasy hair, bushy mustaches, unbuttoned silk shirts that show off hairy chests and gold chains; It might not be what Greeks like me want the rest of the world to think we look like, but – in the 1970s and 80s – this was how a foreigner would describe someone Greek.

The men who popularised this archetype were called "kamaki" – a Greek slang word for the kind of man who spends most of his time in tourist areas trying to pick up girls. Kissing a Greek girl back then would be synonymous to asking for her hand in marriage, but that wasn’t the case for the English and Scandinavian girls visiting Greece in the summer.

In the years before the Greek military junta of 1967-74, Greece’s unique offering of sea, sun and sand covered in semi-naked bodies led to a surge in tourism. The Sexual Revolution had just taken over the West, so young people from that part of the world travelled to Greece in search of a frantic summer of love.

“Doctors, lawyers, builders – all young men of my generation were ‘kamakis’. You see, Greek girls didn’t really go out then,” John Klouvas, one of the most popular kamakis of the time, told me last time I visited the island of Rhodes – where he lives. “We were sexually hungry and AIDS didn’t exist. I was born in 1955 – around 1970, when I was 15, mass tourism exploded. It was thanks to those foreign girls that we came of age. All the Greek girls wanted was to get married. All my friends ended up married to foreign girls.”

Kranidi windmills

Three recently renovated windmills stand on a small hill above the town of Kranidi.

Source: www.mythicalpeloponnese.gr

Waving from the distance, these beautiful tower mills invite guest for a travel through the time. The inhabitants constructed the windmills using wind driven wheels for milling grain.

Every windmill was built from bricks and then it was whitewashed. It had a metal cone shaped roof in the form of a small tower. A cloth cape with is twisted on the axis hanging out of the tower. The windmill has two impressive millstones, one on top of the other, grinded the grain.

Today, the municipality uses the windmills as a venue for its summer cultural events.

Katerina’s inspiration comes from her grandmother, who taught her how to cook and share her food. ‘Whenever you make food with love it will taste great’ is one of Katerina’s favourite quotes.
